Yeah, I was down sick with the flu for a good part of last week, which was a bit frustrating since the weather was absolutely beautiful. And there's nothing like looking out the window and watching the neighborhood kids playing outside in the warm sunshine while you're sick in bed to give that particular knife an extra vicious twist. I finally started feeling better on Friday. So of course it snowed.
Fortunately, the sun came out the next morning and melted off all the slippery stuff so I could go out for a bit of a spin. Let me tell ya, the flu takes a lot out of you even after you think you've recovered. My original plan was to do about 15 miles on Saturday, and then push it up to 25-30 miles on Sunday. It didn't happen - didn't even come close.
The path through the park puts me up against my first real hill about 2 miles into the ride. Since I'm never really warmed up all the way when I hit it, that hill is always tough, but on Saturday that hill almost put an end to my ride. My poor lungs couldn't suck air fast enough, and my heart rate was dangerously close to redline (aka your absolute max heart rate). So I change my plans a bit, and just spun around on the main road in the park. Sunday was better, but still not good. The same hill just about did me in again, although at least this time I didn't fell like I was in danger of a trip the the ER. But anyhow, my longish ride turned into a short lap around the lake. But, hey, at least I got out and rode, right?
P.S. My bonus from work came through. Which means I get to buy my new bike in 4 days, 1 hour and 16 minutes....but who's counting?
Dear friends, family, and whoever else might stumble upon this site,
I've created this blog as a place to record my training, progress, thoughts, feelings, and other mussings as I work towards my New Year's resolution of completing a Century - riding (yes, on a bicycle) 100 miles in a single day. The road towards acheiving this goal will be a long one, requiring not only a great deal of physical training and preparation, but also a high level of mental fortitude and plain old sticktoitiveness (is that even a word?). The latter will probably prove to be more problematic than the former.
All messages of support, encouragement, and hope are greatly appreciated.
